Lesbos (Greece) Impact Trip (November 2019)

Situated in the Aegean Sea, the island of Lesbos is an idyllic place of summer villas and olive groves. It is also the home of one of the most notorious refugees camps, Camp Moria. Located closer to Turkey than to mainland Greece, everyday refugees make the dangerous trek across the watery strait in hopes of a better life in Europe. However, what awaits them at Moria is far from that reality. Moria is currently ‘home’ to more than 5,000 refugees (more than 8,000 at one point), while having the capacity to host only 2,300. Refugees at Moria are a mix of different nationalities from more than 70 countries but mainly from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Africa. Each has a different story but all with the same hope for a brighter future.

On this trip, you will have the unique opportunity to serve in practical ways as instruments to bring hope and dignity to those displaced from home. We will be working with EuroRelief, a non-profit organization that has been granted the permission by UNHCR to manage the daily operations of Moria. Our team could serve in the following areas:

  • Housing - Helping to document housing placements to find room for new arrivals
  • New Arrivals: Register new refugee and provide them with clothing and hygiene kits
  • Security - Guarding entrance to different sections of camp designated for unaccompanied minors, families or single women.
  • Warehouse - Sorting donated clothing to prepare for distribution
  • Camp Activities - When possible, organize and lead social events for women or kids.
  • General Assistance - Other tasks as needed such as maintenance, cleaning, transportation and administration.

This trip will be combined with a team from GAiN Nederlands.
