Current Reality

There are around 663 million people in the world where they cannot readily access clean and safe drinking water. And because of how a lot of the social culture is being structured, the burden of finding clean water falls on women and children. That’s 1 in 9 people
 

Other important stats:

  • in Africa alone, 358 million people do not have access to water and in some places, you cannot find a drop of water in the dry season
     
  • typically, the average woman would walk 5, upwards to 10 kilometers to get water every day
     
  • women and children spend more than 140 million hours each day collectively getting water
     
  • every year, more than 840,000 people die from water-related diseases or 2,300 people per day
  • around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. That's almost 800 children per day, or one child every two minutes.
     
  • every minute a newborn baby dies from infection caused by a lack of clean water and an unclean environment
  • 42% of healthcare facilities in Africa do not have access to safe water
  • 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation, 1 billion people still practice open defecation
     
  • there are more people having access to a cell phone than a toilet
  • stunting affects 156 million children under-five
  • globally, 31% of schools do not have clean water and 34% lack adequate toilets
  • every $1 spent on water and sanitation there is a minimum of $4 economic return
     
  • children’s opportunity for school increases
