The United Nations has stated that on a global basis “every 20 seconds, a child dies as a result of water related disease.” This fact is painfully evident in the country of Benin. Water sources are scarce and what is drawn from the sloughs and swamps is most often dirty and filled with disease.
As a result, we saw this need and began drilling water wells in 2004, actively providing clean water to people in the region.
Today, we have provided over 445 productive wells in Benin and 1 in 20 people in Benin drink clean water from a deep capped well drilled by GAiN. By providing deep-capped water wells right in the heart of the villages, GAiN is helping to break the cycle of disease and death that devastates much of the developing world.
As we prepare to provide a new well in a community, doors are opened to serve the needs of the community in many ways.; one of which is through a LIFE team.
This October, a team is leaving for Cotonou, the capital of Benin. The team will arrive on May 9th and will be staying in the GAiN accommodations, which houses both the Benin GAiN office as well as the guest-quarters.
The week will start off with the team attending church on the Sunday morning and then spending the afternoon doing orientation in order to prepare them for the upcoming time in the field.
On the second day, the team will tour some of GAiN’s drilling sites so they understand the Water for Life initiative.
During the next few days, the team will
- help construct a church building
- pour well pads for newly drilled wells
- host a hygiene and sanitation training sessions in local villages and schools
- spend some time playing with the children
- The team will also help show the JESUS Film. Training will be provided for the team members so that they can effectively share their personal stories. Team members will also have hands-on opportunities to follow up with new believers and help them begin a thriving relationship with God.
At the end of the project, the team will have a chance to experience the culture of Benin by going to local markets and also gain an understanding of some of Benin’s history, through a visit to Ouida, an ex-slave trading post. The team will also spend part of their final weekend attending the inaugural church service of the newly-constructed church that the team helped build.
Many villagers desire an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and regain their health and dignity.
